The black widow is the most medically significant spider found in Crestview, Milton, and Freeport, FL. While they're shy and rarely bite unless threatened, a black widow sting is a medical emergency — and their preferred nesting spots (garages, woodpiles, sheds, and crawl spaces) are the exact areas Florida homeowners reach into regularly.
Identification
- Size: Adult females are about 1/2 inch in body length with a leg span up to 1.5 inches
- Color: Shiny jet-black body with a distinctive red hourglass marking on the underside of the abdomen
- Behavior: Females build irregular, tangled webs in dark, undisturbed locations. Males are smaller, lighter in color, and rarely seen.
Note: Only the female black widow is dangerous to humans. The red hourglass is the definitive identification mark — some females also have red dots on their backs.
Risks and Dangers
- Venomous Bite: Black widow venom is a neurotoxin 15 times more potent than rattlesnake venom (though delivered in much smaller doses)
- Medical Emergency: Bite symptoms include intense pain, muscle cramping, abdominal rigidity, sweating, and nausea. Seek medical care immediately.
- High-Risk Populations: Children, elderly, and immunocompromised individuals face the greatest risk of serious reaction
- Hidden Nesting: Webs are built in low-visibility areas, increasing the chance of accidental disturbance
Control and Prevention
Professional Treatment
Black widow control requires careful inspection of garages, crawl spaces, sheds, woodpiles, and under outdoor furniture. Cadenhead Services technicians apply targeted residual treatments to harborage zones and physically remove accessible webs. We also treat the surrounding exterior to reduce insect populations the spiders feed on.
Prevention Tips
- Wear gloves when handling firewood, storage boxes, or outdoor equipment
- Clear clutter and debris from garages, sheds, and crawl spaces
- Store boxes off the floor and away from walls
- Seal exterior cracks and install weather-stripping on garage doors
- Keep exterior lights off when not needed — they attract insects that spiders feed on
