Ghost ants are among the most common kitchen and bathroom invaders in Crestview, Milton, and Freeport homes. Their pale, nearly translucent bodies make them hard to see against counters and walls — but once they find food or water, entire colonies follow within hours. Florida's tropical climate is their ideal habitat.
Identification
- Size: Extremely small — about 1/16 inch (roughly the size of a grain of rice)
- Color: Head and thorax dark brown; abdomen and legs pale, almost translucent — hence "ghost"
- Behavior: Form extensive trails between food/water sources and nests. Nest indoors in wall voids, potted plants, or behind cabinets. When crushed, they release a faint coconut-like odor.
Note: Ghost ants are often confused with pharaoh ants (similar size, both light-colored). The key difference: ghost ants have a two-colored body (dark head, pale abdomen) while pharaoh ants are uniformly yellow-tan.
Risks and Dangers
- Food Contamination: Trail into food storage, pet food, and prep surfaces — spreading bacteria
- Rapid Spread: Colonies "bud" (split into new colonies) under stress — DIY sprays often make the problem worse
- Difficult to Eliminate: Multiple nest sites and decentralized colonies make them resistant to spot treatment
- Sustained Infestations: Once indoors, populations can persist for months without professional help
Control and Prevention
Professional Treatment
Ghost ants require a bait-based approach — spraying them causes colonies to split and spread. Cadenhead Services uses non-repellent gel baits placed along active trails that workers carry back to queens and larvae, eliminating the full colony structure. Interior treatment is paired with exterior perimeter barrier to prevent re-entry.
Prevention Tips
- Wipe counters and clean crumbs immediately — ghost ants follow sugar and protein residue
- Store sweetened foods (cereal, pet food, honey, syrup) in airtight containers
- Fix plumbing leaks and address moisture under sinks
- Seal cracks around baseboards, countertops, and plumbing penetrations
- Avoid spraying visible ants with retail products — this triggers colony budding
