The house mouse is the most common rodent invader in Crestview, Milton, and Freeport homes. Small, fast, and prolific breeders, they quickly establish populations in attics, walls, and kitchens — where they contaminate food, chew electrical wiring, and pose health risks to families.
Identification
- Size: 2.5 to 4 inches in body length plus a tail of similar length; weight under 1 ounce
- Color: Light brown to gray with a lighter belly; large ears and small black eyes
- Behavior: Nocturnal, excellent climbers and jumpers, nest in insulation, wall voids, and stored materials. A single female can produce 5-10 litters per year with 5-6 pups each.
Note: House mice can fit through openings as small as 1/4 inch (about the size of a pencil). Signs of activity include droppings, scratching sounds at night, gnaw marks on food packaging, and a distinctive musky odor.
Risks and Dangers
- Disease Transmission: House mice can spread Salmonella, hantavirus, lymphocytic choriomeningitis, and other pathogens through droppings, urine, and saliva
- Electrical Fire Risk: Constant gnawing on wiring is a leading cause of rodent-related house fires
- Food Contamination: Contaminated food must be discarded; a single mouse contaminates 10x the food it actually eats
- Structural Damage: Gnaw marks on insulation, walls, baseboards, and stored items
- Allergy and Asthma Triggers: Dander and droppings are potent allergens
Control and Prevention
Professional Treatment
Effective mouse control requires three phases: trapping and removing the active population, sealing all exterior entry points, and ongoing monitoring. Cadenhead Services technicians inspect roof lines, utility penetrations, garage door seals, and foundation gaps — sealing them with rodent-proof materials. Interior trap placements target active runways.
Prevention Tips
- Seal holes and cracks larger than 1/4 inch around the home's exterior
- Store food (including pet food) in airtight containers
- Keep counters clean and empty trash regularly
- Trim tree branches back at least 6 feet from the roof to prevent overhead access
- Stack firewood at least 20 feet from the house and 18 inches off the ground
