Wolf spiders are one of the most common large spiders found in Crestview, Milton, and Freeport homes. While they look intimidating — especially at night when their eyes reflect flashlight beams — they're not aggressive and their bite is medically insignificant to most people. They do, however, indicate an underlying insect problem.
Identification
- Size: Body length 1/2 to 1.5 inches, with leg span up to 3 inches in Florida species
- Color: Brown, gray, or tan with dark striping or mottled camouflage patterns
- Behavior: Ground hunters that don't spin webs. Fast-moving and active at night. Females carry egg sacs attached to their abdomens, and carry spiderlings on their backs after hatching.
Note: Wolf spiders are often mistaken for brown recluse spiders. The wolf spider's heavier body, visible hair, and lack of the brown recluse's violin marking distinguish them.
Risks and Dangers
- Minor Bite Risk: Wolf spider bites are comparable to a bee sting — painful but rarely medically significant
- Fear and Anxiety: Their size and speed cause distress, especially in children
- Indicator of Other Pests: High wolf spider populations typically mean there are plenty of insects they're feeding on inside or around your home
- Pet Sensitivity: Small dogs and cats may have stronger reactions to bites
Control and Prevention
Professional Treatment
Effective wolf spider control starts with reducing the insect populations they feed on. Cadenhead Services applies perimeter barrier treatments around the home's exterior, treats common entry points, and addresses interior harborage zones like garages, basements, and storage areas. Because wolf spiders don't build webs, web removal isn't effective — targeted residual treatment is.
Prevention Tips
- Reduce exterior lighting or switch to yellow bulbs that don't attract insects
- Keep mulch, leaf litter, and woodpiles away from the foundation
- Seal gaps around doors, windows, and garage entry points
- Declutter garages and basements to eliminate hiding spots
- Address moisture issues that attract insects (and spiders that prey on them)
